The Justice I.R. Minakiri Commission of Inquiry set up by Rivers state government to investigate the violence and arson in some Local Government Areas on October 7, has started with invitation of 106 people including present and past chairmen of Eleme,Khana,Ikwerre, Emohua, Ahoada East and Obio/Akpor local government areas
Following the just concluded Local Government polls as conducted by the Rivers Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC) on Saturday, October 5, 2024, violence erupted on Monday October 7, 2024 when most of the newly elected chairmen and councilors under the platform of Action Peoples Party (APP) made attempt to gain access to the hallow chambers of their representatives Legislative Assemblies for the proclamation of the various councilors of the 319 wards in the state.
In the process both the supporters of former governor Nyesom Wike and his successor Governor Siminalayi Joseph Fubara engaged in a fight over control of respective council secretariats after the Nigeria police withdrew from the gates of the respective council headquarters.
Rivers-South-East Senatorial District in Khana LGA I person was killed while in the same South-East Senatorial District, Oyigbo LGA 2 persons were killed
In Rivers West Senatorial District, Ahoada East LGA 1 person was killed, (elder brother to the present Rivers Chief of Staff was killed)
In Rivers East Senatorial District, Etche LGA 1 ESPAC officer was killed at Okomoko/Umuanyagua on the day of the election before the Monday council fire incidence.
The council Secretariats (Headquarters) at Ogale town Eleme was burnt down, at Isiokpo town was burnt down, at Emohua town the council headquarters was also burnt down, and Rumuodomaya town, the council secretariat was also set ablaze.
Speaking to our correspondent at Ogale within the council Headquarters at Eleme, Brother Mike said that the fire incident started about 8:am Brother Mike also hinted that the new council Chairman of Eleme and the elected councilors were able to put out the fire or inferno.
Our correspondent reports that among the 5 persons that were killed, include the elder brother to the Rivers State Chief of staff, Dr. Edisom Ehie of Ahoada East LGA (Rivers West Senatorial District).
Some residents of Rivers State who spoke to National Point correspondent said that the Rivers State Police Command led by Mr. Muhummed Mustapha and his predecessor Mr. Olatunji Riwan Disu should be blamed because of the withdrawal of officers and men from the respective council Headquarters on Monday, October 7, 2024, the same day attackers carried out their coordinated attacks at some council secretariats.
On Monday October 9, 2024 the new Rivers State Commissioner of police Mr. Muhammed Mustapha visited the 4 affected LGAs (Eleme LGA, Ikwerre LGA, Obio/Akpor LGA and Emohua LGA) to see the level of destructions and damages at the 4 councils.
