At last the Hypercity Supermarket built in the place of the former Slaughter Market, in Oginigba community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area has been commissioned for business amid mixed reactions.
Hypercity was a subject of controversy and prolonged protests by the indigenes, especially the women last year, over alleged non-payment of compensation by those who acquired the area. It also resulted in litigations in the court of law by some aggrieved members of the community.
During the commissioning, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, minority leader of House of Representatives, Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. OK Chinda, nor the former Obio/Akpor Council Chairman, Barr. George Tamunor Ariolu alleged to have acquired the area, were conspicuously absent from the event.
Paramount Ruler/Igwugwu Oha 1 of Oginigba community, HRH Eze GB Odum, performed the commissioning exercise to the witness of some of his cabinet chiefs, management and others, on Tuesday, 29th May 2025.
In his address read by his son, Chief AC Odum, the Paramount Ruler expressed delight over the event, and urged management of the establishment to work in synergy with their host Community, so that the continuity of the synergy will remain permanent for the overall interest of the people of Oginigba community.
While cutting the tape to declare the Hypercity open for business, the monarch prayed and wished the establishment well.
Fielding questions from journalists shortly after the ceremony, a member of the Chiefs Council, and Crown Prince, Chief AC Odum, Eze Obiri 1 of Oginigba community said the joy of Oginigba people have no bound as they witness the inauguration of the Hypercity.
“It is a thing of joy and honour having this epoch making occasion, the official opening of Hypercity today”, he said.
According to Chief AC Odum, the problem between the community and owners of Hypercity has been settled, at least for the reason that the Paramount Ruler was physically present to perform the commissioning exercise himself was a clear attestation to the fact that they have resolved their internal crisis, adding that the council of Chiefs is actually working to ensure that all the lingering matters in the courts are being withdrawn and settled out of courts.
He called on the people of his community to partner with Hypercity to achieve their prime target, saying that they should also expect more of the goodies they are happily witnessing currently.
Odum said, “The issue of finance is not our challenge. What is important to us is economic empowerment, ensuring that our people are being carried along in the scheme of activities via employment opportunity”, he stressed.
Also speaking to newsmen, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Oginigba community, Hon. Chima Ogbonda, who is also the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) of Hypercity expressed excitement over the ceremony, which he observed has finally come to pass with everywhere booming with activities.
Hon. Ogbonda who spoke through his representative, Comrade Henry Demion explained that the commissioning was what they have been anxiously waiting for a very long time, and thanked God for the reality of its official opening that now enables people to come in and do business.
“This project having been commissioned will offer a lot of opportunities to the youths of Oginigba community in terms of employment and empowerment. You can see some of our youths have even started working here. So, it is a thing of joy to have them in our soil,” he said.
Apart from the Micheline Police Station which provides security, he assured that the security network of the area will be intact, saying they will make sure everywhere is covered and protected to ensure security of all.
The CSO/CLO appealed to all Oginigba people to see the need to come together and embrace peace, insisting that without peace and unity, there cannot be any meaning development.
Speaking on behalf of Oginigba women, Mrs. Charity Nwerenda Amadi expressed pleasure that at last Hypercity has come to be for the overall betterment of the people of Oginigba.
Mrs. Amadi commended management of Hypercity, expressing optimism that the women and youths of the community will gain immensely from the establishment.
She sued for peace and unity of all to enable the community achieve greatness.
