The people of Ebubu community in Eleme Local Government Area have sent a distress call the Nigerian authorities to save them from the continuous attacks, harassment, and kidnapping by suspected Fulani herdsmen in their farmlands.
In a media statement, the people said that over the past weeks, “Our mothers, wives, and sisters who engage in farming activities their main source of livelihood have faced unprovoked attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen.”
They said the incidents involved kidnapping of women while they are working on their farms; physical assault and intimidation, leading to fear and psychological trauma; destruction of crops and farmland by herdsmen; demand for ransom from families after abductions; and threats to return if complaints are made to authorities.
They said the development has taken a toll on the community in many ways including leaving the women and families in fear. “Many have abandoned their farmlands, leading to hunger and poverty. The situation has also disrupted our local economy and community peace.”
They called on the authorities to give their distress calls the attention it deserved.
Meanwhile, a notable philanthropist, Dr. Douglas Fabeke, has visited the victims of herdsmen attack in Ueken Community in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Fabeke, who is the President of Ogoni Liberation Initiative, said on his social media handle that he met with the Council of Chiefs and the bereaved family to gain a deeper understanding of the recent incidents.
“Through discussions with the Council of Chiefs and community stakeholders, I discovered that the Ueken community is resiliently working together to overcome the challenges posed by the presence of herdsmen, who have unfortunately led to instances of rape, loss of life, and disruption of farming activities.
“This issue affects not only the Ueken community but the entire Ogoni region, as it is a complex network that requires a collective effort to address,” he said.
Fabeke said he was committed to supporting the community in finding solutions and restoring peace. “We are currently compiling our report and look forward to sharing our findings and action plan with security agencies and stakeholders within the next seven days.”
