Graduating students of Rivers State University have kicked against convocation fee of N220,000 charged by the university authorities.
The students, who took to their respective social media handles to express their rejection of the fee, said they would take to the streets if the university authorities fail to cut it to a reasonable level.
They said having completed their programmes, the university should reduce the stress on them having paid all manner of exorbitant fees while undergoing their programmes.
They said other universities in the South-South Zone like the University of Port Harcourt and University of Uyo charged far less for convocation fees.
They therefore appealed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zep-Obipi, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara to intervene.
The university in an internal memorandum dated September 23, 2025 gave convocation fees for graduating students as N220,000 for doctorate degree graduands, N145,000 for postgraduate students, N97,000 for first degree graduands, and N68,000 for certificate programmes.
The memo was issued by the Registrar, Mr. I.S. Harry.
