…Civil society groups demand accountability, condemn ‘digital slap’ culture
The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced the resolution of the case involving the alleged assault on Mrs. Juliet Enabulele Asein, a reporter with the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS).
NUJ Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City. He said the matter had been “amicably settled” following the intervention of stakeholders who engaged all parties to restore peace.

Alenkhe expressed appreciation to members of the Union for their solidarity throughout the incident, describing their cooperation as a demonstration of unity in the defence of press freedom. He also commended media organisations and security agencies for their support.
The NUJ chairman reiterated the Union’s commitment to safeguarding journalists in the state and urged practitioners to remain professional and uphold ethical standards. He did not, however, disclose the terms of the settlement.
Mrs. Enabulele was reportedly slapped on Wednesday by Mr. Kelly Okungbowa, popularly known as Ebo Stone, said to be a close associate of the Edo State Governor. The incident allegedly occurred inside the Government House, sparking public outrage.
In a separate statement, the Edo State Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights condemned the assault, describing it as “egregious” and a violation of human dignity and press freedom.
The coalition accused some political actors of normalising aggression through what it called the celebration of “digital slaps,” warning that such attitudes embolden violent behaviour. It called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to distance himself from the act and uphold accountability within his administration.
The group also referenced Sections 34 and 39 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee human dignity and freedom of expression, insisting that no individual is above the law.
Among the demands made by the coalition are: A transparent investigation into the alleged assault; Public condemnation of the “digital slap” narrative; A formal apology to Mrs. Enabulele and EBS; Stronger protections for journalists in Edo State; and A peaceful protest to demand justice.
The statement was signed by Marxist Kola Edokpayi, Coordinator General of the coalition, and Comr. Aghatise Raphael, its Secretary General.
Despite the NUJ announcing a resolution, civil society groups insist that accountability must follow to deter future attacks on journalists.
