Rivers United Football Club has confirmed that its team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for its President Federation Cup Round of 16 match against Nasarawa United.

According to a statement issued by the club’s Media Officer, Charles Mayuku, the incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its camp.
The club disclosed that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident but assured supporters that no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were recorded.
“The club can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement said.

Rivers United stated that the health and welfare of its players and officials remain its top priority, adding that the club’s medical team is closely monitoring those affected.
Management of the club is also assessing the situation and making necessary arrangements following the incident.
The accident comes as the Nigeria Premier Football League side was preparing for a crucial Federation Cup Round of 16 encounter against Nasarawa United in Awka.
The club expressed appreciation to fans, partners, and members of the football community for their concern, prayers, and support.

Rivers United said further information regarding the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup fixture would be communicated in due course.
