The Kalabari Renaissance Foundation has announced that Minama Community in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State will host the 2027 Kalabari New Year Festival.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Harry Awolayeofori Mcmorrison, and the Secretary, Ibiba Don-Pedro, the organisers said Minama was selected immediately after Elem-Kalabari in recognition of its deep historical connection with the founding fathers of the Kalabari Kingdom.

The Foundation said the festival, scheduled to hold on November 16, 2026, would usher in the 2027 Kalabari New Year celebration and is expected to attract a larger turnout due to the community’s road accessibility and its rich cultural and historical heritage.
According to the statement, Minama offers participants a rare opportunity to reconnect with the origins of Kalabari history in its authentic form, while also showcasing unique spiritual and cultural attractions that visitors would find both educational and rewarding.
The Foundation expressed appreciation to the Amayanabo of Minama, HRH King Dr. Iboroma Pokubo, Loku XII, and the Minama Council of Chiefs for accepting to host the festival.
To ensure the success of the event, the organisers appealed for financial support from individuals, corporate organisations and other stakeholders. They also called on advertisers and vendors to partner with the Foundation.
As part of preparations, the Foundation announced the inauguration of a new Finance and Fundraising Committee as well as a Contact and Mobilisation Committee to coordinate activities ahead of the festival.
The annual Kalabari New Year Festival will feature colourful cultural displays, boat regatta, environmental rejuvenation activities and keynote lectures. The event is also expected to host cultural troupes from neighbouring kingdoms, representatives of the Nigerian Tourism Board, as well as presentations from members of the Kalabari diaspora.
