Chief Ralph Obioha, a prominent pro-democracy activist, businessman and former member of the House of Representatives, has died.
Obioha, who was associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), was one of the notable figures involved in the struggle against military rule and the campaign for the restoration of democracy following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Obioha became widely recognised during Nigeria’s political crisis of the 1990s for his role in mobilising support for the restoration of the democratic mandate believed to have been secured through the June 12 election.
During the years of military rule, he operated from Canada and the United States, where he worked with other pro-democracy activists to mobilise international support for Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
His political career, however, predated the June 12 struggle. Obioha was a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic and later founded the Justice Party, which participated in the 2003 presidential election with Reverend Chris Okotie as its presidential candidate.
He also played a role in the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, serving as chairman of its Caretaker Committee and contributing to efforts to advance the interests of the Igbo people and the South-East region.
Obioha’s contributions to Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement received formal recognition in June 2026 when President Bola Tinubu conferred a national honour on him alongside other Nigerians who played significant roles in the struggle for the restoration of democracy.
The honour recognised his contribution to the campaign for democratic governance and the sacrifices he made during the years of military rule.
His death marks the loss of a prominent figure whose political career spanned the Second Republic, the turbulent years of military rule and Nigeria’s eventual return to democratic governance in 1999.
Obioha’s legacy remains closely associated with the struggle to uphold the June 12 mandate and the broader fight for democracy and constitutional government in Nigeria.
