The Delta State Ministry of Environment has commenced the fumigation of some major markets and public places across the state.
The exercise which is at the instance of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, is part of proactive measures towards curbing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fumigation which started with the popular Ogbe-Ogonogo Market in Asaba the state capital, according to the Commissioner of Environment Hon. Christian Onogba, will be replicated in all the major markets in the state.
The commissioner while speaking to the press on the exercise said the government of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa is a government that believed in taking proactive measures against the spread of any pandemic adding that it will go a long way in reducing the spread of any virus in the markets and public places.
Onogba also confirmed that his ministry had also succeeded in fumigating and evacuating all illegal dump sites in some major cities in the state.
He stressed the fumigation exercise cannot be more timely than now that COVID-19 pandemic is spreading across the globe and Delta State and most states are experiencing a total lockdown of activities with markets and public places because of the Corona virus.
The commissioner called on residents in the state to always keep their environment clean and take ownership of their environment saying a clean environment will always be free of diseases.
He also called on them to make sure that they adhered to all instructions concerning some of the precautionary measures against COVID-19 and maintain the social distance as advised by the Nigerian Council on Disease Control [NCDC].
The commissioner, who also visited a makeshift market at the Arcade in Asaba, said the market is a palliative measure by the government to reduce the suffering of the people because of the lockdown.
He advised the management of the market to provide sanitizers at the entrance of the market and for the maintenance of social distance by the people.
