Parents have been adjudged the major platforms fuelling human trafficking because they feel sending their children abroad translates into making money.
Chairman, Delta State Task Force on Human Trafficking And Illegal Migration and commissioner for Justice, Hon. Peter Mrakpor stated this in Asaba during a rally put in place in commemoration of the World Day Against Human Trafficking.
The chairman expressed worries that some parents encourage their children to travel abroad to compete with fellow parents whose children are abroad.
He wondered why some youths are not taking advantage of the various programmes put in place by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to engage youths in the state.
Mrakpor, who admitted that the issue of human trafficking is a big problem, added that the task force would be taken to all nooks and crannies of the state to flush out all those involved in the crime.
In her own remarks at the occasion, the commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Flora Alantan said resources are numeric in Delta State and Nigeria at large and as such, the youths have no reason to subject themselves to the pain they go through in the name of travelling abroad.
Acting permanent secretary, Directorate of Orientation in his remark, frowned at the reduction of value for human lives among Nigerians. He pointed out that most times, greed was responsible for falling victim to traffickers because the money spent trying to travel abroad is enough to start a good business.
Some returnees from Libya narrated their harrowing and excruciating experiences while in Libya.
Earlier in the day, the rally which was put together in conjunction with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) took members from Inter Bau Roundabout to Oshimili South Arcade in Asaba, the state capital.
