Another gas leak has occurred in Sangana Community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The leak is reported to be from an Adriatic 1 rig owned by Conoil, on Wednesday June 29,2022.
A major gas leak occurred in that community on November 1st, 2021 leaving the community folks with series of health challenges.
The community folks had barely finished asking for help from the necessary stakeholders who are yet to respond when this other major leak occurred.
According to Noel Ikonikumo, chairman of Sangana Fishing Union, the gas was just oozing out from the rig spreading fast into the sea and blowing into the community. As usual, the company is said to have evacuated its staff leaving the community members to face the impact of the leakage.
Ikonikumo said, “The gas is oozing out now as we are talking, more than the other one. It is now getting to the point of the rig burning now. The rig wants to start burning now.
“It is still from the same rig. They even brought another one to join that one. There are two rigs there now by the same Conoil Adriatic1 and another one. It happened this evening and it is very severe, worse than even the other one.
“If care is not taken, from now on there will be fire in that place. Conoil has started evacuating their workers now.
‘On Saturday, a vessel that came to supply the rig that had a problem before fell down and the chemical in the vessel and other things poured into the ocean. The chemical flowed from the sea to the shore. And that one happened on Saturday morning”.
Another indigene, Ayibatonye Benjamin said, “Another blow out has happened again, same rig. It is just happening now and they are evacuating their people.
All calls put across to the public relations officer of Conoil there, Richard Edegbai by this publication, proved abortive as he did not respond to the calls as at the time of filing in this report .
