Following the incessant high rate of insecurity along the Emohua, Degema/Kalabari road in Rivers State the chairman National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW Abonnema branch Comrade Enefaa-a Peters has threatened to shut-down if the situation persist.
Speaking to National Point on the worrisome situation in Abonnema, the visibly angry chairman said “The situation in Emohua, Degama/Kalabari riadis worrisome because the government are not helping matters in the sense that the roads are in bad shape so we that are plying the road conveying lives and properties is our business but, most time as we have bad roads, these kidnappers get hold of our vehicles, going away with our passengers, vandalizing properties and most times shot at us and so we need the government to help us by fixing the roads and security gadgets should be mounted on the roads.”
Comrade Enefaa-a Peters took a swipe on the four local government chairmen of Emohua, Asari-Toru, Degema and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas has done nothing as regards the state of insecurity as the kidnapping issue is happening almost everyday.
The NURTW Chairman advised the drivers that immediately is 6 O’clock they should stop carrying passengers to minimize the rate of kidnapping but, due to the traffic jam in Port Harcourt contribute to our drivers returning late. The security you see along the road are not doing their job rather they are extorting monies from drivers he stress.
Also speaking, a retired Department of State Security DSS official Mr. Dresmonson Briggs, said the Emohua, Degema/Kalabari Road is an insecure lonely road, it is because of the four Local Government Areas use the road to and- fro that is making the road lively. “The expectation of the four Local Government Area chairmen or where necessary, the governor can come into grade 50 metres to each side with 50 metres, there is no way a criminal will come and your vehicle is coming that you will not see and the criminals also have the instinct that if they are caught they know the consequences.
The security expert, suggested for a static surveillance of a 50×50 feet derrick fitted with four flood lights. “The road needs four derrick security post and when the security personnel goes in it will be locked and in the derrick there is toilet facility, if you are 50 ft. up you see from a far distance and with the security personnel not compromising, could serve as a permanent security measure.
Earlier worried by the spate of insecurity along the only motorable route to the Kalabari kingdom, the Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Hon. Onengiyeofori George, had challenged the police to tackle the menace of kidnapping and other criminal activities along the Emohua – Kalabari road, adding that the Council Chairmen will adequately support the Police to beef up security along the road.
The ASALGA Council Boss made the call yesterday together with his DELGA counterpart, Hon. Michael John Williams, when the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations in the State, DCP Muhammad Shehu, had a joint fact-finding assessment of the various black spots along the road.
Hon. Onengiyeofori George urged the Police to develop a technologically-driven security architecture in its fight against insecurity.
