The recent declaration of support for the establishment of state police in the country by the Northern Governors Forum and the Northern Traditional Councils Forum has been commended by the Southern Governors Forum.
After kicking against the idea, the Northern Governors Forum announced their support for state police in the face of the uncontrolled reign of terror imposed in their parts by terrorists and bandits.
In a statement signed by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu, SAN, chairman Southern Governors Forum and governor, Ondo State, the forum lauded the timely decision of the northern leadership for the establishment of state police.
“The Southern Governors Forum received with great relief the news of the resolution of the 19 Northern State Governors and Northern Traditional Rulers Council to call for the immediate establishment of State Police to address the continued insecurity challenges in the country.
“Their decision to support the call for constitutional amendment to reflect the current realities could not have come at a better time than now when the confidence in the capacity of the Federal Government to secure the country appears shaky,” part of the statement read.
It highlighted the lopsided nature of the federal security apparatus and its failure to secure the nation making the need for a state police imperative, stressing that all patriots must embrace the push for state police.
“All patriots must salute the courage of the 19 Northern Governors and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council for their stance at this crucial moment in the country.
