The vital Eleme section of the East-West road was blocked for two days last weekend when drivers of articulated vehicles protested the killing of a driver at Alode Junction by people said to be community boys. The protest, which began on Friday, February 23 lasted till Saturday evening when security agencies persuaded the drivers to free the road. The gridlock caused by the protest stretched for about 11 kilometres from Onne Port complex to Akpajo Junction, trapping thousands of motorists and commuters that used the road on the two days. The Rivers State Judiciary recently issued a mass of queries to its staff for reporting late to an official meeting. Trouble was said to have started when, the management called for a meeting with the workforce, on January 9. The meeting whose notice according to sources did not go round, was scheduled for 10am. Akoko-Edo Development Association (aka Akoko-Edo Forum) has expressed dismay at the recent spate of attacks on security personnel deployed to Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, particularly the police, by some members of the communities. A first attack was reported in Ojirami, followed by irate Ojah community youths.
