A bus driver, simply identified as Voki has been reportedly hacked to death in Benin City, the Edo State capital, over N20,000 unpaid balance for his hired 10-seater bus.
The father of three was reportedly abducted by some hoodlums on Sunday night of June 4, 2023 after a confrontation between him and a yet-to-be identified person over the unpaid balance.
The remains of Voki, an indigene of Delta State who was resident in Benin City, were recovered on Monday (June 5, 2023) beside the Benin Central Motor Park, Obakhavbaye, in Oredo Local Government Area by Oba Market Police personnel.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a devastated close friend alleged that Voki was waylaid by some persons led by one of his fellow drivers around Iyaro area on the night of Sunday June 4.
The source said: “They called me and said your Warri brother is dead, come and see him. When we got there, we saw a crowd of people around a dead Voki on the ground. “His body was found near a gutter by some drivers at Obakhavbaye Motor Park where he worked”.It is not clear what really transpired.
“But the injury we saw on his body was not enough to kill him. This is because Voki was a very strong man, even three men cannot fight him in a fight.
“Meanwhile, we learnt that he was waylaid by some persons led by one of his fellow drivers around Iyaro area on Sunday June 4th night. They (attackers) collected all the cash with him”, the source added.
He said after seeing Voki’s body, they contacted the police.
“After we got there and discovered his body, we quickly contacted the Police.
“His only sibling is in Lagos. Voki’s mother who died a few months ago, is still in the mortuary. Voki’s only sister died last year,” his close associate said.
He added: “Some residents told us they saw some unknown persons where Voki’s corpse was dumped on Sunday night. They told us that they were scared to speak hence it was late.
“They told us that they were surprised the following morning to discover his corpse.”
Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor was yet to respond to enquiry via the telephone as at the time of filing this report.
But, a source at the Command, confirmed the incident, stating that the police have commenced investigation into the incident.
The police officer who pleaded for anonymity explained that Voki’s body had been deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Women and Children’s Hospital morgue in Benin for preservation.
