The Chairman of Eleme LGA, Chief Obarilomate Ollor, has approved that the sum of N50,000 be paid to every undergraduate from the local government area as bursary allowance.
According to a press statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Chairman on New Media, Mr. Godwin Stephen, the approval was consequent upon the recommendation of the 13-member Bursary Committee appointed by the chairman to screen and verify students of Eleme Local Government Area in higher institutions.
The council chairman said the idea of paying bursary to undergraduates was not a political move but one made to better the lives of students.
“I don’t know how the council will do it but we will pay N50,000 as bursary to our students in tertiary institutions. If they were less than 1,000 persons, we would have paid N100,000 but with this number, we will pay N50,000,” Ollor said.
He said it had become imperative to render assistance to students because of the difficult times they were going through to raise money to fund their education.”We know the times are tough for the council considering what we get as allocation but the money we get from allocation is meant for the generality of Eleme people not for one single person.
“Our students have been of support to us by maintaining the peace we enjoy in the LGA today, you never hear them indulge in crime or illegality, so we must reward good conduct and peaceful coexistence.
“We want our people to enjoy the benefit of good governance. We are not doing this because of anybody but because this is what our students deserve,” he added.
The chairman said the disbursement of the awards will start in the first week of October.
“We will start with the students who are in school so that it will make more sense and hope that those at home must have resumed. We don’t want to give them the money when they are at home so that it won’t defeat the essence, we want to be reasonable,” he said.
He pointed out that the awards will be extended to postgraduate students subsequently. The Chairman advised the students to be serious with their studies, and to stay away from social vices because it would destroy them.
The Chairman of the Bursary Committee, Hon. Paul Chutte said the screening process was thorough. He added that a total of 1,875 students were screened while 1,385 were duly confirmed.
The President of the National Association of Eleme Students, Comrade Beesemi Beeyah, thanked Hon. Ollor, saying the bursary was the biggest student project by any council and pledged the support of the students to the chairman.
