Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality as the world commemorates International Women’s Day.
In a goodwill message to women in the state, the governor praised their resilience, strength and contributions to the development of Rivers State and society at large.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Onwuka Nzeshi, Fubara said his administration remained committed to creating opportunities that would enable women to thrive and realise their full potential.
“As governor, I am proud to stand in solidarity with our women, recognising their pivotal role in shaping our society,” he said.
He commended women for their efforts in communities, workplaces and homes, noting that their courage and determination continue to drive progress and prosperity.
“As we mark International Women’s Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality. Let us create opportunities for women to thrive and reach their full potential,” the governor added.
Fubara also paid tribute to women in Rivers State, describing their strength as a source of inspiration to society.
The statement recalled that the Fubara administration had taken steps to promote women’s development in the state through various empowerment initiatives.
Among such efforts is the Women Economic Empowerment Programme, under which about 1,000 women received grants of N50,000 each to support their businesses.
The statement also highlighted the role of the governor’s wife, Lady Valerie Fubara, who recently supported women farmers with a N10 million grant for 20 beneficiaries under the Renewed Hope Initiative Women Agricultural Support Programme.
It further noted that the state government had partnered with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to create job opportunities and empower women and youths across Rivers State.
Fubara’s avowed commitment to championing women’s cause has raised questions from women’s rights advocates, who have criticised his list of commissioner nominees to the House of Assembly that contained only one female name, who was eventually rejected by the House of Assembly.
