The Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, may have constituted the state executive council but he appears to be having difficulty in getting someone to be appointed the Commissioner for Information.
National Point gathered that the governor is being cautious about filling the position of the information commissioner because of the huge responsibility the commissioner who would bear as the mouthpiece of the government. That might be the reason why the important seat of Information Commissioner is still vacant.
That has not stopped hopefuls from jostling and lobbying for the position. Information gathered revealed that old horses are lined up including Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke, a former commissioner and House of Representatives member from Etche Local Government Area. Nwuke served under the Rotimi Amaechi administration, crossed with him to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before bouncing back to the Peoples’ Democratic Party under the Nyesom Wike administration.
The next person is Ibim Semenitari, Amaechi’s former commissioner who later served as acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission. Ibim crossed over to the APC with Amaechi but during the 2023 governorship election, pitched camp with Senator Magnus Abe before moving back to join Fubara under the PDP. Semenitari is from Opobo and her father, Sir Gabriel Toby is believed to be a powerhouse behind Fubara.
Also on the list of interested candidates is Pastor Paulinus Nsirim. Nsirim is a former Information commissioner under Nyesom Wike and was chief press secretary under the military administration of Col Shehu Musa. He is from Obio/Akpor.
Chief Chris Finebone, long-term spokesperson of the APC in Rivers State joined the Wike government at the tail end of the administration. He is also a kindred of the governor from Opobo.
The choice before the governor, who has received knocks for recycling Wike’s men is very tough and some believe he may shift from the known to someone fresh for this all important position. The silent allocation of a key ministry, Health to a relatively inexperienced doctor and daughter of former governor, Peter Odili is still being queried.
