Legendary Nigerian international, George Finidi, has been signed on as the Technical Manager of top Nigeria’s Premiership side, Rivers United FC.
George signed for the Port Harcourt-based side at a special ceremony witnessed by sports writers at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
Popularly known as Finito by local fans, Finidi came into prominence 30 years ago while playing for Sharks FC, Port Harcourt that translated to Rivers United a few years ago. It was while playing for Sharks that he was identifies and called up to the Super Eagles of Nigeria by the popular Dutch Manager of the Super Eagles, Clemens Westerhof.
George distinguished himself at his Super Eagles role as an right-winger and became the world’s best passer of the ball during his time. He combined beautifully with Rashidi Yekini to help Nigeria win the African Cup of Nations and qualify Nigeria for the first time for the World Cup in the United States.
He later on secured a successful signing with Ajax Amsterdam FC where he along with another Nigerian great, Kanu Nwankwo, they won the UEFA champions league in 1995. After a stint with Real Betis of Spain, Finidi went into some form of hibernation.
After retiring from acting playing, he underwent a coaching course and had coached a number of teams including Enyimba FC of Aba before he was signed on this year as the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
His performance at the Super Eagles turned out woefully. He lost two vital matches and drew one as Nigeria battles with lowly rated teams to qualify for the World Cup.
He resigned amid criticisms last month.
His signing for Rivers United is like a homecoming for Finidi. He said this that much during the sign-in ceremony.
But he declared that he was not back in Port for fun. “It’s nice coming to Rivers State. But I am not here for fun. It’s all about winning. I am here going to get results. The target is to get a continental ticket this season,” he said.
