The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has strongly condemned the brutal assault on several of its members by men of the Rivers State Police Command during Monday’s peaceful demonstration by the #GetItBack group in Port Harcourt.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Union described the attack as unprovoked, barbaric, inhuman, and a violation of the journalists’ fundamental rights.
The statement, which was signed by the Chairman, Comrade Paul Bazia and the Secretary, Dr. Ijeoma Tubosia, demanded an apology by the Rivers State Police Command within 14 days over the matter.
The affected journalists, including Charles Opurum of Channels Television, Allwell Ene of Naija FM, Soibelemari Oruwari of Nigeria/Info, Ikezam Godswill of AIT, and Femi Ogunkhilede of Super FM, were covering a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt when they were tear-gassed by police officers. Mr. Opurum was subsequently arrested and detained.
The NUJ expressed deep regret that a security agency tasked with protecting citizens and property would instead resort to terrorizing innocent individuals, particularly journalists who play a vital role in informing the public.
The NUJ said failure to apologise unconditionally within 14 days will result in a boycott of police activities by journalists in the state. Additionally, the Union demanded that all officers involved in the condemnable act be held accountable and brought to justice.
The Council further warned that any future assault on journalists in Rivers State will be met with resolute resistance by the NUJ.
“As a watchdog of society, the NUJ will not stand idly by while security agencies engage in barbarism and the brutalization of innocent citizens, especially media practitioners. Enough is enough,” the union said.
It however said, “The NUJ remains committed to its partnership with the police in contributing to the development of the nation, while emphasizing that the police should not jeopardize the existing relationship and collaboration between the two entities in Rivers State.
“The NUJ appeals to its members to remain calm and peaceful, confident that the police authorities are investigating the matter to ensure peace and a positive working relationship moving forward.”
