The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has suggested that military operations conducted within the Benin Kingdom should adopt codenames drawn from the Benin language.
The monarch made the suggestion when the Commander of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, paid him a courtesy visit at the Royal Palace in Benin City on March 4, 2026.
In a statement issued by Captain Kenny Anyanwu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, the Oba also pledged the support of the Benin Palace for the Brigade’s ongoing efforts to maintain security across Edo State.
Oba Ewuare II commended the Nigerian Army for its role in protecting law-abiding citizens and safeguarding lives and property in the state. He offered prayers for the safety and protection of the troops as they continue to carry out their duties.
The royal father noted that giving military operations Benin-language codenames could further reflect local identity and strengthen the connection between security efforts and the host community.
Earlier, Brigadier General Balogun said the visit formed part of his familiarisation engagements since assuming command of the 4 Brigade a few months ago. He explained that he had come to formally introduce himself to the monarch and seek royal blessings and prayers.
The Brigade Commander expressed confidence that the goodwill and cooperation of the Benin throne would enhance the Brigade’s efforts to maintain peace and security in Edo State.
He reaffirmed the Brigade’s zero-tolerance stance against all forms of insecurity and assured that the Nigerian Army remained prepared to respond decisively to threats to peace in the state.
The visit culminated in a special prayer and blessing session conducted by the Oba for Brigadier General Balogun as he continues to discharge his responsibilities.
