Tragedy struck in Asaba, Delta State on Saturday, September 29 as a police officer reportedly killed a female colleague while on official duty.
The police officers from B Division in Asaba, were attached to the ministry of Environment which was carrying out demolition of illegal structures in the state capital.
It was gathered that the sad event took place during the demolition exercise at the Bonsaac area of the state capital,.
Trouble allegedly started when the market women were trying to prevent their containers from being demolished. In an effort to scare the women, the policeman fired some shots into the air, a situation that provoked the women who, according to an eye witness, angrily rushed at the policeman and in the process, another shot was mistakenly discharged from his riffle which hit his female officer.
The police woman was immediately rushed to the El-Comfort hospital near the scene but was later referred to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba where she was confirmed dead.
When contacted, the state commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Adeleke confirmed the incident and added that investigation is ongoing.
He said, “The matter is at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Asaba, so we are waiting for the report of the incident”
About ten persons have been arrested by the police over the incident and they are being detained at the State Police Headquarters, Asaba.
