Citing his concern to place the interest of Rivers State above his personal ambition, Senator Magnus Abe governorship candidate of the social democratic Party, SDP has announce the withdrawal of his suit at the Tribunal against the March 18, 2023 victory handed to Siminalayi Fubara of the People’s Democratic Party .
Abe declared as reason for stepping aside, the interest of Rivers State, ‘The interest of our State has always been and will remain paramount to me. We cannot at any stage of our politics, put our own interest above the interest of those who have sacrificed so much to follow us’.
National Point sources indicate , Abe is being offered a possible Ministerial position, a compelling enough reason for the politician to let go of the suit.
The elections were notably violent in the Ogoni area with sustained gunshots throughout March 17 to election day. Two persons reportedly lost their lives on election day.
Abe, who was addressing SDP stakeholders at Freedom House, Port Harcourt after his return from a visit to the President-elect, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja, also said his decision would also serve the interest of his supporters and those who had sacrificed so much to support the struggle he led.
“The interest of our State has always been and will remain paramount to me. We cannot at any stage of our politics put our own interest above the interest of those who have sacrificed so much to follow us.
“We cannot also put our ego above every other consideration in our State. We must learn as politicians to be pragmatic and put the interest of Rivers State and Rivers people above every other interests,” he said.
In arriving at his decision, the SDP candidate he had consulted with the party both at the national and the state levels.
He said it was imperative that his petition should not add to confusion and bickering in the state so that the state cold move forward. “I take this decision very conscious of the pain, of the trauma and of the confusion it will bring to all of you,” he said.
