The Southern Nigeria People’s Mandate (SNPM), a socio-political organisation, has called on Nigerians to resist any attempt to rig the 2027 general elections, alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government is making moves to undermine the electoral process.
In a statement signed by its Chairman and Founder, Augustine Chukwudum, and Secretary General, Segun Diya, the group accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of acting out a script allegedly designed by the ruling party to reject electronic transmission of election results.
The group claimed that recent developments regarding electronic transmission of results were part of a broader plan to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 polls. SNPM noted that civil society organisations and “prominent Nigerians who stand on the side of truth” had resisted such moves in the past.
The organisation expressed concern over the economic situation in the country, stating that many Nigerians have been struggling to survive over the past 26 years of civil rule. It cited rising inflation and the high cost of living as evidence of hardship under the current administration.
According to the statement, the exchange rate of the naira to the United States dollar has risen to about N1,700, while the prices of petroleum products have increased significantly, with petrol selling at about N880 per litre, diesel and kerosene at about N1,200 per litre, and cooking gas at about N1,050 per kilogramme. The group compared these figures to prices before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, when the naira exchanged at about N450 to the dollar and petrol sold for about N225 per litre.
SNPM alleged that the administration’s economic policies have worsened hardship for citizens and claimed that advice it offered to the President on stabilising the economy was ignored.
The group said it had advised the Federal Government to strengthen the naira by progressively reducing the exchange rate against the dollar and to halt fuel importation, urging that local refineries be supplied adequately to reduce the price of petrol significantly.
While criticising what it described as “harsh policies,” the organisation urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and ensure their votes count in the 2027 general election.
Efforts to reach representatives of the Federal Government and the APC for comments on the allegations were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
