The Rivers State People’s Assembly (RSPA), a political support group in Rivers State, has announced plans to unveil its preferred governorship candidate for the 2027 general election, describing the prospective choice as credible, competent, experienced and widely accepted.
The group said it had mobilised support for the unnamed candidate across the 23 local government areas of the state following extensive consultations with political stakeholders.
The State Coordinator of RSPA, Mr Abie Inye Georgewill, disclosed this while addressing journalists after a well-attended meeting of the group in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Georgewill said the assembly was carefully considering its options to ensure that its preferred candidate possessed the leadership qualities required to restore good governance, accelerate development and improve the living conditions of Rivers residents.
He explained that the group would support a governor who feared God, respected humanity and had the competence, administrative experience and political capacity to take the state to greater heights.
According to him, the preferred candidate must enjoy broad public acceptance and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the development of Rivers State.
“We will support a governor who will rapidly transform the development of this state, has general acceptance and has the interest of the state at heart,” Georgewill said.
Expressing concern over the current state of infrastructure and environmental sanitation in the state, the RSPA coordinator lamented the deteriorating condition of some internal roads and the accumulation of refuse in parts of Rivers State.
He said the situation was inconsistent with the state’s former reputation as a Garden City, adding that the group was determined to support a leader capable of restoring that status.
“Now, Rivers State is in a mess,” Georgewill said, while expressing optimism that the emergence of a credible leader would reverse the situation and place the state on the path of sustainable development.
He assured Rivers residents that the assembly would soon make its preferred candidate known to the public.
Also speaking, the Spokesperson and Secretary-General of RSPA, Comrade Kote Nwialu, appealed to residents and members of the group to remain patient as consultations with political stakeholders continued.
Nwialu said the group was committed to supporting a credible and broadly acceptable candidate who would provide purposeful leadership and advance the state’s development.
He stressed that the assembly would not settle for a candidate who lacked the courage, competence and independence required to govern effectively.
“We are going to support a governorship candidate who will stand the test of time without fear of intimidation or molestation, and a competent person who will deliver the dividends of democracy to all in the state,” he said.
The RSPA spokesperson further expressed concern over what he described as prolonged stagnation in the state’s development, insisting that Rivers needed a leader capable of restoring public confidence and putting the state on a new path of growth.
He identified improved security as another major priority, arguing that the next governor must establish an effective security network to protect lives and property across the state.
Nwialu reiterated that the group had undertaken consultations across the political landscape and would soon announce its preferred candidate.
He maintained that the assembly’s ultimate objective was to support a leader who would unite the people, strengthen security, improve infrastructure, restore environmental sanitation and deliver tangible democratic dividends to residents.
The group did not disclose the identity of the prospective candidate or indicate when the formal unveiling would take place, but expressed confidence that its eventual choice would meet the expectations of Rivers residents ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
