Edo State commissioner of Police , CP Mohammed Dankwara has ordered detectives from the Homicide Department to fish out the suspected gunmen who murdered a Catholic priest, Rev. Father Charles Onomhoale Ighechi of the Benin Archdiocese on Wednesday, June 7 in the Edo State capital.
Mr. Dankwara’s marching order came after operatives of the command stormed the crime scene shortly after the remains of the priest were reportedly evacuated to an undisclosed hospital by his relatives.
The Edo State Police spokesmen, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor who said on Friday in Benin city, appealed to members of the public to furnish the detectives with information that would unmask the perpetrators of the gruesome murder.
According to SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, the deceased clergyman was the vice principal of St. Michael College, Ikhueniro Community in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The Edo State Police spokesman said the lifeless body of Rev. Ighechi was found at Ikhueniro along the Benin-Agbor expressway, suburban Benin-City where it was apparently dumped by the suspected killers.
The Edo Police spokesman added, “The Command had received a distress call through the Police Divisional headquarters at Okhuaihe on 8th of June, 2023 at about 0710hrs, that an unidentified adult male corpse suspected to have been murdered was abandoned in Ikhueniro Community along the Benin-Agbor Road, Benin-City.
“CP Mohammed Dankwara, the Commissioner of Police Edo State who visited the crime scene commiserated with the Catholic community in Edo State and Nigeria as he urged them, the family membersÂ
He gave a marching order to the Command Tactical teams to go after the perpetrators of “this dastardly act and arrest them.”
Chidi Nwanbuzor reiterated the determination of the police to arrest and bring the offenders to justice.
“Criminal elements should vacate Edo State or be ready to face severe punishments under the law.” CP asserted.
