The Edo State commissioner for Business, Trade and Cooperatives, Hon Afie Braimoh, says the Edo State NUJ Council’s just set-up Food Mart outlet, is in line with the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government’s ‘Made in Edo Product’ policy.
She made the commendation during the commissioning of the Union’s Food Mart on Friday, March 31, 2023, in Benin City.
The commissioner thanked the leadership of the NUJ State Council for the establishment of Edo Food Mart in its NUJ Secretariat describing it as a plus to Governor Obaseki’s Mega agenda policy
According to her, the state government will partner with the NUJ to ensure that made-in-Nigeria products, goods and commodities are purchased at cheaper and avoidable prices and, commended the union for the laudable initiative with a promise that government will work with NUJ to make the idea a reality.
“I want to say that this was in line with the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government ‘Made in Edo Product policy,’ she said.
The commissioner urged citizens of the state to cue into the state government’s laudable objective of helping to boost the local economy, noting that the burden of making the Edo Great Again Policy succeed rests squarely on the shoulders of everyone and not only on the state government.
She, urged corporate organizations and groups to integrate the policy into their procurement policies.
Braimoh noted that the policy has gained wider acceptance across the state with “Made in Edo” products adorning the shelves of the major supermarkets and food chains in the state and urged members of the NUJ to help beam light on the ‘Made in Edo Products’ policy.
She promised to provide support to the union for better bargain in the sourcing of the food items from the farmers.
Braimoh commended the Alenkhe-led union for placing the general well-being of its members above any other consideration within the short time of its tenure.
In his address, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, the state chairman of NUJ said the union conceived the idea of the food mart on realizing that its members were spending a huge chunk of their income on foodstuffs as a result of the spiralling cost of living in the country.
Alenkhe, who described the food mart as a “welfarist” package for members, added that the members of the union as well as “friends of the union,” will now be able to source their foodstuffs and other related items at a pocket-friendly cost.
“The Edo NUJ Food Mart is part of the Union’s efforts to cushion the effect of the spiralling cost of living on its members”, he added.
The unveiling ceremony was graced by dignitaries and members of the union who made purchases.
