The Founder of Omega Power Ministries, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere has suspended indefinitely his plans to give out the hands of autistic wards in his care in marriage.
This followed an intervention by the Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, which responded to calls by human and civil rights organizations for the widely publicised marriages to be stopped.
The organisations, which include the Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), had observed that the marriages violated legal requirements for marriage.
The Ministry consequently called a meeting where its officials has held a meeting with Apostle Chinyere, and other stakeholders and resolved that the advertised marriages be stopped.
According to the ministry, the marriages though done in good faith, were not in line with existing state laws guiding child welfare and protection.
It stressed the importance of adhering strictly to legal procedures, particularly in matters involving minors.
Apostle Chinyere agreed to comply with all legal requirements, including proper registration and approval processes for handling children under care.
The meeting took place in Port Harcourt. Participants emphasized the need to uphold child protection laws and ensure that all welfare practices meet approved standards.
Apostle Chinyere acknowledged gaps in his knowledge of certain legal provisions guiding the care of minors and assured authorities of his willingness to address the issues raised and collaborate with the Ministry going forward.
In a facebook post after the meeting, the OPM funder said, “Future marriage plans for my autism children suspended PERMANENTLY. Special doctors shall be employed for them.”
