The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial Primaries held in Edo State resulted in the death of a party chairman, Tunde Igbinoba and the destruction of over 20 choice automobiles in Benin City.
Information gathered by National Point Newspaper whose correspondent visited the scene at Airport road, in Benin City revealed that the primaries which held across the three senatorial districts of the state – Edo-South, Edo Central and Edo North were conducted on two platforms one loyal to the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, while the other group was loyal to the party’s South-South vice chairman, Chief Dan Orbih. It was a fight for supremacy.
For the Edo South Primaries the Governor’s team held theirs at the indoor hall of the ultra-modern Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium while Orbih’s faction did not make their venue public.
The election had a heavy presence of operatives of the security agencies including members of the state security network who outnumbered the delegates.
By the time information about the venue of Chief Orbih’s parallel primaries got to a top official of the state government, he was alleged to have mobilized some hoodlums to the place with a mission to disrupt the process.
On getting to the venue the hoodlums reportedly opened fire and started shooting and in the process, destroyed a lot of vehicles and the killing of one Mr. Igbinoba said to be one of the party’s chairmen in Oredo Local Government Area. There were also massive destruction of properties and choice automobiles within the area.
The results that emanated from the parallel primaries show that in the South, Hon. Mathew Iduoriyekemwen emerged from Governor Obaseki’s camp to defeat incumbent Senator Mathew Urhoghide while Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama was elected from the Chief Orbih camp.
In Edo North, Hon. Pascal Ugbome was elected from Chief Orbih’s group, while Victoria Edelokun emerged from the governor’s group.
For Edo Central, Architect Mike Onolemenme was elected from the Chief Orbih’s camp while incumbent Senator Clifford Ordia got elected from the governor’s camp.
