The Governorship Candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs has urged the people of Rivers State to reject violence, intimidation and political division as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Lulu-Briggs made the call in his Independence Day goodwill message to Rivers people on Thursday to mark Nigeria’s 66th anniversary of independence.
He said the anniversary offered an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made for the country’s freedom and renew their commitment to building a nation where citizens could live with dignity, security and hope.
The businessman and philanthropist described the last three years of political tensions and crises in Rivers State as costly experiences from which the people must learn.
“Our State contributes enormously to Nigeria through our resources, enterprise and people. In the last three years, we have however endured painful political tensions and crises that have imposed heavy costs on our people,” he said.
According to him, political power carries enormous responsibility, stressing that government must protect citizens’ rights, strengthen democratic institutions and create an environment where communities and individuals can prosper.
Lulu-Briggs maintained that Rivers State belonged to all its people and not to any particular group or political godfather.
“Rivers State belongs to all its people, not to any select group or godfather, and its future must be shaped by peace, justice, inclusion and responsible leadership which our people deserve,” he said.
He urged Rivers people to participate peacefully and thoughtfully in the 2027 democratic process, particularly by considering the leadership, policies and values that could promote unity, peace and development in the state.
Lulu-Briggs also appealed to politicians and their supporters to avoid actions capable of destroying the state’s communities, saying political disagreements should not degenerate into hostility.
“We can disagree without becoming enemies, and compete politically without destroying our communities,” he said.
“No election is worth the life of any Rivers child, and no political ambition is worth the peace and future of Rivers State. A new Rivers State is possible.”
The businessman also expressed sympathy to victims of the recent floods in Rivers State, calling for decisive measures to address the recurring challenge.
He urged the people to remain hopeful about the future, declaring: “Together we will work for a peaceful, united and prosperous Rivers State. Let us Reset Rivers State. Our finest chapter is still ahead of us.”
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and prayed for the continued wellbeing of Rivers State and Nigeria.
