BENIN CITY – The Leadership of the Neo-Black Movement, NBM, of Africa has restated the constitutional right of the Nigerian people to carry out peaceful protests and peaceful assembly.
In a press statement signed by NBM President and approved by the Trustees, which was made available to journalists in Benin City, Edo State, the movement however said such protests and assemblies to demand for a better Nigeria must remain peaceful and not hijacked by criminal elements.
The NBM distanced itself from a statement on X issued by an ex-National Head and President of NBM, Else Stanley Kakor on July 26th in which he tried to abrogate the rights of the people to exercise their rights to protest and assemble as enshrined in Section 40 of the Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Right.
According to the statement, “The unauthorized statement tweeted by Kakor violates the Fundamental and Constitutional Rights of Nigerians; equally violates the Principles of Democracy, Equality and Social Justice for all, the fundamental objectives and founding ideals of the NBM of Africa”.
It added, “We therefore call on Nigerians to disregard the unauthorized statement on X and go about their Civic and Constitutional responsibilities; ensure that the protest to demand for a better Nigeria is peaceful and not hijacked by criminal elements.
“We equally call on all security agencies to uphold their duty to protect the citizens of Nigeria; provide adequate security for peaceful protesters, ensure that their rights are not infringed upon, and that their safety is guaranteed.”
The NBM appealed to President Bola Tinubu to give personal directives to the security agencies not to instigate violence among the peaceful protesters and guarantee Nigerians that no life is lost while advancing the rights of peaceful protesters and showcase to the world that Nigeria as a nation is coming of age where human life is sacrosanct.
The NBM emphasised that, the NBM of Africa is a lawfully registered non-governmental and non-political organization or neither affiliated to any political party
