Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force have killed one Silas Oderereke, popularly known as ‘General,’ a notorious armed robber and cult leader in Ahoada West area of the state.
Oderereke, who was the leader of the Greenlanders Cult group in the area had been on the wanted list of the police for over four years. He was killed along with one of his gang members while two others, Danger Man and 2-Man escaped.
According to the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Grace Iringe-Koko, the confrontation with the police took place at Oderereke, Ahoada-West Local Government Area, where Oderereke resisted arrest and engaged the police in a shootout.
The Greenlanders’ cult group leader, who operated in Ubie clan of Ahoada West, was notorious for armed robberies, land grabbing and violent attacks against people that challenged his criminal activities.
It was while he and his gang were breaking into the property of the late Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Robinson O. Robinson, that the police were tipped off.
The police squad confronted the gang after chasing them to the community’s tank farm in Oderereke. In the ensuing shootout, Oderereke and a gang member were killed, while others sustained injuries. The other two gang members escaped.
The PPRO said subsequent search of the gang’s hideout led to the recovery of a cache of weaponry, including a G3 Rifle and 19 7.62 x51mm ammunition. The police also discovered a camp established by Oderereke between Oderereke and Olokuma Communities, which served as a base for launching robbery attacks on neighboring communities.
Members of the communities expressed relief after the operation, and told stories of how residents had relocated to Port Harcourt to escape the being attacked by the cult group.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, commended his men for the successful operation and issued a stern warning to cultists in the state to abandon criminal activities or face the consequences.
