Court Jails Two Women To 49 Years For Trafficking

A Benin High Court, Edo State presided over by Justice Geraldine Imadegbelo has sentenced two women to 49 years in prison for trafficking in human beings.
Sandra Obasuyi, 29, charged by the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP) was found guilty on seven count charges and accordingly sentenced to 49 years and nine years, while the second accused Evelyn Edoleyi, 28 bagged three years for each of the three count charges for a total of nine years imprisonment.
The two convicts who were first arraigned on March 29, 2016 were accused of trafficking two teenagers aged 15 and 18 while the third victim was aged 20.
The sentences are however to run concurrently as the first accused, Obasuyi who was convicted on seven count charges which carries seven years each will spend seven years in jail while Edoleyi, the second accused is to spend three years in prison.
The Public Relations Officer of the Benin Zonal Command of NAPTIP, Obi Onyebuchi hailed the conviction, noting that the case which was prosecuted by the anti-human trafficking agency for eight years is aimed at sending a clear red signal to human traffickers.
The Edo NAPTIP Command spokesman reiterated the determination of NAPTIP to checkmate the illicit activities of human traffickers who traffic little girls for prostitution in the zone.
