An outbreak of avian influenza otherwise known as Bird Flu has been reported in Afam, Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Poultry farmers in the community said hundreds of their birds have died following the outbreak. The, farmers, who said they were yet to report the outbreak to the Ministry of Agriculture in Port Harcourt, told reporters that they had applied measures to temporarily stop the deaths of their birds.
The Chairman of Rivers State Poultry Association of Nigeria, Charles Afonwa advised poultry farmers to improve their biosecurity of their farms to put the situation under control.
The State Ministry of Agriculture had confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a 3,000-bird poultry farm in Iriebe, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The ministry said it had quarantined the affected farm, with other measures taken to prevent further spread. It also asked poultry farmers affected to reach out to the ministry for help.
