Rivers Elders Council Calls For Unity As Emergency Rule Ends

The Rivers State Elders Council has called on political stakeholders in the state to embrace peace and reconciliation following the end of emergency rule and as Governor Siminalayi Fubara resumes full democratic governance alongside his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the House of Assembly led by Hon. Martins Amaewhule.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, the council described the transition as an opportunity for reflection, healing, and renewed commitment to the unity and development of Rivers State.
“We urge all stakeholders, without exception, to embrace the peace and reconciliation that has now returned to our dear state,” the statement said.
The elders cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, media incitement, and actions capable of reigniting political discord. They urged individuals and groups “fanning the embers of discord” to place the state’s interests above personal agendas and allow the governor and the assembly to work harmoniously.
The council commended Governor Fubara and the Assembly leadership for reconciling their differences, reminding them of the commitments they made in Abuja and reaffirmed before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“That vow before Mr. President remains sacrosanct. Therefore, going forward, they must work harmoniously in the interest of the state. The people of Rivers State expect nothing less from them,” it stressed.
Acknowledging the resilience of Rivers people during the period of emergency rule, the elders praised President Tinubu for taking “proactive action” that prevented the state from sliding into crisis. They also lauded former governor and current Minister of the FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, for his role in brokering reconciliation.
“Again, he demonstrated that he was a man with a large heart. He did not only bring the parties together but also ensured that the parties went to Mr. President to brief him first-hand on the details of their understanding,” the council said.
Reaffirming support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the elders assured him of Rivers people’s loyalty and expressed gratitude for his confidence in appointing a Rivers son into his cabinet.
“With the peace we now enjoy, we must all unite to sustain stability, foster development, and ensure that the unfortunate circumstances that led to the emergency rule never reoccur,” the statement concluded.
