Former Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Turner Timinipre Isoun, is dead.
According to an obituary announcement by his family, the renowned scholar, scientist and public servant passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
The family described Professor Isoun as an outstanding scholar, visionary leader and dedicated public servant whose immense contributions to science, technology, education and national development would be remembered for generations.
Professor Isoun was a towering figure in Nigeria’s academic and scientific community. He made history as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, now Rivers State University, where he laid the foundation for the institution’s growth as a centre of excellence in science and technology education.
Following the return to democratic rule in 1999, he was appointed Minister of Science and Technology by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, serving from 2000 to 2007.
During his tenure, Nigeria recorded significant milestones in space science and technology, including the successful launch of the country’s first satellite, NigeriaSat-1 and the communications satellite, NigComSat-1, initiatives that marked a major leap in the nation’s technological advancement and space programme.
Professor Isoun was widely respected for his commitment to scientific research, innovation and the development of human capital, earning recognition as one of Nigeria’s foremost advocates for science-driven national development.
The family said details of his funeral and burial arrangements would be announced in due course.
His death has been described as a great loss to the academic community, the scientific establishment and the nation at large.
