Winner of the 2021 AFRICA MATHEMATICS Project Competition is Nigerian Dabotubo Lordson Lawson, from Kalabari kingdom, Rivers State.
Datubo is receiving widespread praise for this accomplishment in a season of growing low school attendance by the young. Many young Kalabari no longer treasure education resulting in high school drop-out rates. Membership of violent cult groups is high and many teenagers prefer to be engaged in the dangerous but lucrative artisanal crude oil refining business known as kpofire.
The Kalabari were famous for early exposure to Western education in the Niger Delta and had hundreds of highly educated persons including women, who were already university graduates by the early 20th century.
