A man, known as Bestman from Nwagbara family in Nkpor village, Rumuolumeni Community in Rivers State was stabbed to death by his wife Thelma in the early hours of Thursday February 13, 2020. Cause of the killing is yet to be known.
National Point gathered from a close family source that the murder of the man, second son of the family whose parents are still alive, came as a surprise.
The source said, “I don’t know what happened but devil has used the woman to cause the untimely death of her husband. No matter the level of the problem even if there is a problem, that shouldn’t have made you to kill a man. It is certain that husband and wife do have problems but not to that extent.’
Mr. Bestman as he is called, is a family man with five children, four girls and one boy, who reside at St. John, Rumulumeni Area, Port Harcourt.
The incident happened around 2.am in the night and the family got to know of the mishap when the wife called the deceased’s brother to inform him that the husband’ has been shot dead in his residence.. The contacted brother quickly alerted his other brothers and sisters and they all rushed to the scene. They all assembled there about 3am.
On getting there, they found their brother lying on the floor in the pool of his blood. The wife had told them he was shot but on investigating, it was gathered that Bestman was in deep sleep when the wife stabbed him to death.
According to the source, the wife allowed him to die first before she began to make calls to alert people.
“The husband has already given up the ghost before she called because the blood that gorged out of the body had become cold and congealed before the arrival of the brothers. Also before the relatives arrived, she had called the tenants in the compound to help her out, and the tenants that went there after the incident confirmed that the blood has already been cold before their arrival, meaning she has killed the man for long before alerting neighbours in the compound and the husband brothers”, the source explained.
As the police came, they swung into action investigating. They checked round the house, the compound whether there was anywhere bad people could have penetrated the compound and killed the man as it is just a newly built apartment but they couldn’t find anything. The police then interrogated the security man, asked him when he man opened the gate for the deceased, to which he was reported as answering, “As the man just entered the compound, I locked the gate at about 6 minutes after Nine (9:06) pm”. The security man also told the police that the man did not come in with anybody, confirming that his death must have been an inside job.
Though the wife said he was shot, neighbours said there was no gun shot heard. They asked her if it was a silent gun shot. The police on their part everything in the house intact.
They searched round the compound, entered the rooms checked the ceilings, everywhere was intact, no stain or trace anywhere. The windows were all locked; everywhere was tight according to our source.
The policemen still searching for a clue decided to turn the deceased who was lying face down all these while up. The body had fallen from the bed and lay on the ground on the stomach. In the process of turning over the body, the police discovered the knife used in killing the man. He was stabbed on the rib (chest) and there was a gash indicating an attempt maybe to drag out the knife before the man fell pushing it deeper in.
The fingers pointed to the wife and the police have taken her into custody as prime suspect while the body of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary. Also arrested are the security man and a boy living with the couple.
The wife is from Owerri, Imo State and is said to worship with the Mountain of Fire Ministries.
National Point gathered that the wife has been accused of infidelity but the husband used to plead on her behalf.
“Thelma has an affair with a DPO and once the husband caught her but the man covered her up, this is why the death looks suspicious,” the source noted.
The couple has four daughters, two of them in the university and the other in the secondary school while the boy is a primary school pupil.
Bestman’s death adds to the growing list of husbands killed by their wives. While people are speculating that the killings may not be unconnected to stored-up resentment from abuses, Bestman according to family and neighbours is not an abuser.
Facebook user, Iykechukwu Ikechukwu who shared videos from the scene of the incident on his timeline, claimed the man never cheated on his wife but only preached “repentance”.
He wrote; “My neighbor was stabbed by his wife, Rest in peace, Bestman…we do crack jokes everyday if we come back from work….chioo I will see you no more.
“Nobody should say anything about Bestman cheating, he is not a cheating type, yesterday he was preaching to his wife to repent but rather than repenting she killed him in the middle of the night…”
