Members of the South South Chiefs, Elders and Opinion Leaders Association of Nigeria, a coalition of Niger Delta leaders committed to eradicating poverty in the region, Wednesday January 15, 2020, conferred on a respected Ogoni monarch. HRH King(Dr) Ambassador Taalor Tornwe IV, the honour of being one of its patrons.
Presenting the certificate of the honour to the Mene Bua Boue, national chairman of the association, High Chief Omubo Harry said the choice came after careful observation, which found him most deserving of the position as a leader who gathers people and who can bring together, the types of rulers the association desires.
Chief Harry explained that the body was born out of frustration over negligence and the resultant suffering and poverty in the oil rich Niger Delta, noting that the focus is how best to bring like minds together to work towards the eradication of poverty so the people can live better lives.
The conferment took place at his temporary palace in Port Harcourt.
Responding, Mene Taalor Tornwe expressed surprise and happiness at the honour and promised to support the association to meet its goals. He regretted that the colourful ceremony which hosted over 30 members of the South South Chiefs, Elders and Opinion Leaders and was witnessed by some friends of the monarch held outside his domain.He explained that some misguided youths in his community destroyed his palace because he said he did not want cultism.
He seized the opportunity to call on the Rivers State government and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC to help build him a new palace. He thanked the South South Chiefs and Elders for the honour and called on Niger Deltans to close ranks and speak as one so that the problems in the region will attract needed attention.
The South South Chiefs, Elders and Opinion Leaders is a pressure group working for an improved Niger Delta and has its members in all six Niger Delta states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers as well as Abuja, Lagos, UK and USA.
