Some coastal communities in Akwa Ibom have become trapped as the Atlantic Ocean continues to surge in response to rise in water volume.
An SOS sent to this medium by a concerned citizen Evangelist Glory Alexander alerted that the ocean surge is flooding communities in Ibeno Local Government Area. Some of the seriously affected communities in Ibeno which need urgent intervention are, Akata, Iwoukpoul Opolum, Itag-Abasi and Ntafre.
The people’s misery has further been compounded by the fact that the flood has cut them off from neighbouring communities, thus denying them access to supply of needed stuff for their existence even as it has halted their livelihood pursuit. The people are essentially fisher folks.
Help is yet to come their way while the angry ocean keeps advancing.
The SOS read:
“Please speedy action is required against ocean swing in my community Akata in Ibeno. If care is not taken we will not have Akata again. My concern is the life and health of women and children there.
“We don’t know where to run to. The road linking us to other communities where we can buy fish is also not accessible. Don’t know what to do; am so confused!
“I spoke with the member representing us at the National Assembly, he said I should copy and send the names of affected communities which I did, am still waiting.”
