Defence for Human Rights and Democracy DHRD is concerned about the series of attacks on the All Progressive Congress APC, Social Democratic Party SDP, Accord and Labour Party as they go about in Rivers State campaigning to get citizens to vote for them.
It is the right of all registered political parties to engage the people through campaigns to sell their manifestos within the provision of the1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.
Rivers State in every electioneering cycle has been noted to be a theatre of war, where people are killed and properties worth millions of naira are destroyed, hence the nickname “Rivers of Blood”.
DHRD emphatically state that, It is the fundamental human and political rights of all citizens to support, canvas and vote for any candidate of their choice without being beheaded or attacked as it is currently seen in Rivers State.
More worrisome, is the perceived compromise of the Rivers State police command headed by CP Okon Effiong Okon, who is obviously doing nothing to arrest the situation.
Therefore, DHRD calls on the Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser and the International community to as a matter of urgent security concern beam light on Rivers State to forestall the break down of law and order in the state and return normalcy in the shrinking political space in the state.
We equally call on the Department of State Security, DSS, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC and the military to adequately provide security in all nooks and crannies of the state.
The Defence for Human Rights and Democracy, DHRD hereby warns that if the security situation does not improve to protect all political parties from freely engaging the people in a way of campaign we will be left with no choice than to embark on a massive protest until our demands are met.
