The police in Rivers State said that they have arrested a 30-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed a 12-year-old girl in the back and fled.
The victim known as Miss Oluebube and her attacker, identified simply as Abigail were both residents of Chukwu Street in Rumuodara at Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Port Harcourt at the time of the incident.
A sister of the victim identified as Oluchi told reporters at the press conference what happened. “My sister was washing dishes outside when our mother went to the market. The woman (suspect) was fetching water outside and because our corridor is dark, people could barely see each other.
She said her sister who was carrying water did not know she was at the corridor.
Oluchi said, “She asked my sister to sweep the water before she came back from fetching another water. My sister agreed. On coming back from where she went to fetch water and saw that the pool of water was still there, the woman entered her house and came out with a kitchen knife and stabbed my sister in the back.
“As soon as she saw that the head of the knife had broken and was stuck inside my sister’s back, she entered inside her room, locked her door, passed behind, scaled the fence and fled. She was caught eventually and taken to the police.”
Oluchi said her sister was rushed to the hospital where doctors carried out surgery to remove the knife stuck in her back.
The Rivers State police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and that the suspect was in the custody of the police. She said the victim was responding to treatment and that investigations were still ongoing.
