The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said it declined to sign the Peace Accord, which was organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC) because several of its leaders had been arrested without reason ahead of the election.
The State chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, stated that the party would only consider signing the accord if the police released its arrested members.
He called for the arrest of certain APC members who he alleged were responsible for the Benin Airport attack on July 18, 2024, which resulted in the death of Police Inspector Akor Onuh. Onuh was attached to Monday Okpebholo, the APC governorship candidate.
The Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar, had asserted that Nigeria’s democratic journey was shaped by the dedication of its people, and the unwavering efforts of institutions like the National Peace Committee, which was committed to promoting peaceful, credible, and fair elections.
Abubakar, who spoke at the signing of the Edo State Peace Accord, said,”This is not just a ceremony but an important commitment to uphold the peace, unity, and democratic values of our dear nation, Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s democratic journey has been shaped by the dedication of its people and the unwavering efforts of institutions like the National Peace Committee, which is committed to promoting peaceful, credible, and fair elections.
“Since our formation in 2014, the Committee has worked tirelessly to foster an environment where every Nigerian can exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear of violence or intimidation.
“Today, as we stand on the gateway of yet another critical election in Edo State, we urge all political actors and stakeholders to commit themselves to the cause of peace in Edo State.
“The signing of this Peace Accord signifies your readiness to place the interest of the people which you want to serve above individual or party ambitions.
“It is a commitment to conduct campaigns free of hate speech, incitement, and violence, and to accept the outcome of the votes as long as it is adjudged to be free, fair and credible.
“Elections are a pillar of democracy, and in democracy, there are no losers; only participants who play their part in advancing the will of the people they represent and serve.
“I appeal to the esteemed candidates, parties and their supporters to remember that peace is the foundation upon which progress and development is built and established. Without it, none of the promises made to the people of Edo state can be fulfilled,” he stated.
The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that had at an earlier press conference said it would not sign the peace accord later on signed the peace accord.
The National Peace Committee, which had arranged for all 18 political parties to sign the agreement, is yet to issue a response to the developments.
With tensions escalating, observers are urging the party to reconsider its position, ensuring a smooth and non-violent election process for Edo State.
