Journalists have been called upon to stand with the people in their coverage of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
Pastor Omolara Joseph made the call in a sermon she delivered at a special Thanksgiving Service by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council at the Redemption Hall Model Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Elelenwo, Port Harcourt. The service marked the conclusion of the 2025 Correspondents’ Week.
Pastor Joseph, emphasizing the crucial role of journalists as “watchmen of the nation,” urged them to adhere to God’s principles and seek divine protection in their challenging profession. She stressed the importance of maintaining gratitude, especially during times of danger, saying, “Every time you go out on assignment and return safely, give thanks.”
The pastor warned journalists against compromising their integrity, emphasizing the need to “keep their hands clean” and avoid being swayed by political agendas. “Do not give Satan a foothold. Stand on the Lord’s side. With new glory comes favor, safety, and victory,” she cautioned.
Drawing on biblical parallels, Pastor Joseph compared the journalists’ role to that of the prophet Elisha, who exposed the secrets of the Assyrian king. “So will God reveal the plans of evil people to you,” she declared.
Focusing on the theme “New Level of Glory,” Pastor Joseph called for a spiritual and moral awakening among leaders, emphasizing the need for unity and a collective vision for the state and the nation. She cited Dubai as a testament to the power of unity and vision, urging Nigerians to learn from its success.
Addressing journalists directly, she urged them to remain impartial and prioritize truth above all else. “Your work is sensitive and dangerous,” she said. “Once you pick up the pen, your tribe and religion must take a back seat – only truth must lead.”
Pastor Joseph also addressed political leaders, urging them to prioritize the well-being of the people over personal gain. “Don’t destroy the people like water in a calabash. You will one day account for your leadership. Your children will inherit your legacy. Don’t ruin Nigeria because of 2027,” she warned
Concluding her message, Pastor Joseph emphasized the importance of repentance, united prayer, and seeking divine forgiveness and restoration for Rivers State. “Let the common man breathe. Let us live in peace, afford basic things, and build our small homes,” Pastor Joseph implored.
Bro. John Udochukwu, President of the RCCG RHMP Men’s Fellowship, expressed gratitude for hosting the correspondents, saying, “Your role as the light of the nation makes us proud to associate with you.”
Amaechi Okonkwo, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and meaningful worship experience.
