Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries ahead of the state governorship election.
Fubara announced his decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the move followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends and political associates.
The governor said although the decision was difficult, it was necessary in the interest of peace, stability and unity in Rivers State.
“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual,” he stated.
Fubara pledged his support for whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate, stressing that the party remained a collective platform for all members.
He thanked his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifices throughout his political journey, acknowledging the disappointment many of them might feel over his withdrawal.
“To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey who gave their time, resources, prayers, and unwavering hope, I offer my deepest gratitude,” he said.
The governor hinted at undisclosed pressures and difficult circumstances surrounding his decision, but maintained that his actions were guided by wisdom and the desire to preserve peace in the state.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he added.
Fubara also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership for their support and encouragement during the process.
Reaffirming his loyalty to the ruling party, the governor urged APC faithful in Rivers State to remain united and committed to the party’s future.
He emphasized that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender.
“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside from participating in the upcoming Rivers State gubernatorial election not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he stated.
Fubara further assured Rivers people of his continued commitment to serving the state until the end of his tenure.
